House of Juju 2019 Circuit Race 2 Recap

04/27/2019

The Central Valley Mini Stocks made their first visit to Keller Auto Speedway at the King County Fair Grounds on Saturday April 20th. This race was the first of five visits the 2019 House of Juju CVMS Circuit will make to the Legendary 3/8 Mile Clay Oval in Hanford. Twenty-four Mini Stocks showed up ready to race giving Hanford one of its largest Mini Stock car counts in recent history. Sixteen CVMS regulars and eight non-CVMS cars filled the pit area to the max.

The twenty-four cars were split into three hot lap/qualifying groups each made up of eight cars. The groups went out on track one at a time to take a couple hot laps. The same group of cars finished their hot laps, slowed down, spread out on the track, then took two qualifying laps as a group qualification style format. When qualifying was complete, the 32X of Jason Cook held quick time at 20.872, followed by the 18x of Dan Myrick with a 21.023, and the 2018 CVMS Champion Greg Baronian coming in 3rd with a lap of 21.050.

The field of twenty-four was divided into three split speed heat race groups, then a full invert of the groups took take place. Each heat group had eight cars assigned with the fast cars at the rear of the starting grid for the 6-lap heat. The CVMS heat races pay valuable championship points and help determine the starting grid for the main event. CVMS heat races never lack excitement!

Heat race one saw the #9 of Gene Glover and #32x of Jason Cook come from deep in the field to finish 1st and 2nd. Heat race two was plagued by one DNS and two DNF's. Randy Brown Sr. would lead the way with the win with everyone else racing for second. The race for second was a three-way battle that lasted all the way up to the checkered flag with 2017 CVMS champ #1 Danny Myrick taking 2nd and #75 Jeff Durant edging out #6 Andy Boydstun at the line for 3rd. Heat race three was won by Greg Baronian driving the #67 car. Brent Myrick held his second starting position fending off the hard charging Clint Massy in the #777 car.

The main event saw twenty-two cars fill the field side by side with Cook starting on the pole, Brown Sr. to his outside, followed by two of the three, 4 Banger Racing entries of Baronian and Myrick (18x). The green flag waived and all twenty-two cars hit the gas for a full field of CVMS main event action. Lap one would see a caution for the 43 of Helder Santos with a solo spin and mechanical issues causing the 43 to retire for the evening. The field of twenty-one would single file restart and make a nineteen-lap run to the checkered flag, caution free the rest of the way. The 32X of Cook got a great jump on the 82 of Brown with Myrick (18x) and Brown battling for second on lap 2. Baronian and Glover would touch in turn three on lap two and slow both of their progress. Myrick (18x) was able to get by Brown Sr and set his sights on the 32x of Cook. Glover and Baronian battled all race long allowing the hard charging Ryan Blank in the #88 to get around both drivers. The full field was spread front to back with the leaders of Cook and Myrick running 1 and 2, having to drive around lapped traffic. Cook had a late race get together with the 17 car of 2019 CVMS race #1 winner, Daren Willson in turn 1. Myrick was there to pounce but overdrove his entry into turn 1 in an attempt to make a pass for the lead. In the end, Jason Cook bested the field with a 2.280 second margin of victory over Myrick, and 10.785 seconds back to Brown Sr. to round out the top three.
